Sixteen Million Reasons Why Heritage Had FUN in Florida

Thursday, January 14, 1999

The annual FUN Show has just concluded and most dealers felt that this was one of the hardest working shows they had attended in a very long time. They were kept busy from the beginning of the show till the end, although, many thought that there were several better shows in the last year. 1998 was so good for the majority of dealers across the country, the FUN show was expected to continue the same trend. The best overall description of the show results is that dealers are "cautiously optimistic". Some reported that they were waiting for others to boost buying prices before diving into the bourse competition. Toward the end of the show it appeared that many dealers were more comfortable and started pursuing some coins on their want lists at higher levels. Also, a few dealers mentioned that they had received word from their offices stating substantial orders had been finalized, alleviating some of their anxiety. Albeit, the FUN Show provided the backdrop and, the dealers that worked vigorously, concluded a "more than satisfactory show".

Being the first show of the New Year, and one of the top five of the year, we attempt to gauge how 1999 will fare. The FUN Show Committee provides, as much or more than any other organization, an arena for buying and selling coins for collectors and dealers, offering exhibits, educational seminars, club meetings, and many other opportunities for numismatists to share in this fascinating hobby. The advertising was also quite successful, as attendance (by dealers and collectors) appeared to be much higher than last year. Overall, it appears that 1999 is off to a prosperous start.

A further reason for the cautious approach may have been the anticipation of the Heritage Auction that ultimately brought over $16 million in prices realized. This is a rather large chunk of money that definitely could have caused many dealers to hold off spending during the show. Obviously, the underbidders still had money to spend for other coins after they found that someone wanted the lot more than they did. This could explain why the show displayed more activity near the auction's culmination, leaving the unsuccessful bidders to roam the bourse floor in search of other treasures. We spoke with several collectors who tried to purchase some of the C & D Gold in the sale, only to find out that their thick wallets came up just a little short. However, several of these collectors are rather well off and will eventually find something that satisfies their collecting needs.

Heritage Numismatic Auctions, Inc. parlayed a massive set of famous collections into an amazing extravaganza. We are glad to present some of the highlights below, although, you really need to obtain a copy of the prices realized in order to get the full impact of this monumental sale.
