ANA & HERITAGE TO SHARE SPOTLIGHT

Monday, July 27, 1998

The excitement is beginning to build, as the next two weeks will be very important to the rare coin industry. This is an opportunity for all numismatists to acquire some of the many coins that they have on their want lists. Beginning this week, a majority of dealers from all over the country, will be in attendance for the year's biggest event, the ANA. It is being held in Portland and typically signals the start of the second half of the trading year. Many dealers are concluding their summer vacations and are gearing up for the fall schedule.

This year's ANA marks the 107th anniversary of the American Numismatic Association. The ANA spends thousands of dollars putting on this event so that collectors can spend their time and money viewing and purchasing some of their favorite coins. It is also a time of education as a multitude of seminars are available to the thousands of collectors who attend this annual show. The actual show dates are August 5th to the 9th, although the pre-ANA begins July 31st. This allows dealers to gather and prepare for all the festivities. In fact, many dealers do so much wholesale business at this pre-ANA show that some of them only attend the first week; they leave the retail business to the dealers who are more equipped to handle it.

As the summer months draw to a close, most dealers have reported that they have done more business this summer than is typically characteristic this time of year. They still have extensive want lists and collectors are very serious about obtaining many of the items they need for their personal collections. Many collectors save their money all year long just to attend the ANA Convention. These collectors are members of this trusted organization and feel that the dealers who have tables will be competitive and fair as they search for rarities. The amount of business done between dealers and collectors is usually based on how much time the dealers are willing to invest.

Heritage Numismatic Auctions, Inc., is the auction house of choice for the Portland ANA. Heritage has well over 3,000 lots of just about everything you could imagine, especially in a sale that receives so much publicity. There are raw coins, certified coins, Patterns, Currency, Gold coins, Type coins, Medals, Territorials, Error coins, and just about everything in-between.
