| Early Half Dollar 1795 50C - 55 - NGC - $15000
1795<50C> 2 Leaves AU55 NGC. O-121, High R.4. This variety is quickly identifiable by the bold remnants of a star under the Y in LIBERTY. Apparently the engraver sunk star 9 before realizing that the upper legend was incomplete. The star detail was then partially effaced and the Y properly entered into the die. And thus the famous '16 Star, LIBERT ' variety that could have been was averted! Such is the joy of early American coinage. Other die imperfections are observed: The obverse shows a 2-mm graver's slip emanating from Liberty's second lowest curl, and the upper serif of the 5 in the date is boldly recut. On the reverse, traces of another letter--possibly an E--are visible under the upper portion of the last S in STATES.

O-110a R-3. PQ. Very choice fields. Lovely, original, steel gray toning evenly distributed throughout. Terrific bold strike. Looks more like a VG-10 than VG-8. The perfect addition to an early type collection. Lovely!

| Early Half Dollar 1806 50C - 63 - PCGS - $13250
1806<50C> Pointed 6, Stem MS63 PCGS. O-115a, R.1. The variety is confirmed by the recut T and Y of LIBERTY and the five berries on the reverse, the lowest of which has no stem. As Overton describes, the crack at the bottom of the date becomes sharper and branches into two cracks at the left, one passing below stars 1 to 3, the other going through stars 1 to 5. A crack has developed at the top of STATES but does not progress downward to join UNITED, as Overton indicates that it should. Some Bust half specialists suggest that no such advanced crack exists. Dusky golden-gray toning displays splashes of cobalt-blue and lavender on the reverse. The design elements are well impressed and nicely centered on the planchet, and the dentilation is complete and strong on both sides. No adjustment marks are visible.
