Well, Bubba, it looks like the Fourth Edition of our Cherrypickers' Guide is just about ready to go to press.
Bubba:
Yep, and I think our decision to break it down into two volumes was the smartest thing we've done since buying those 100 bags of Delaware Quarters last June.
Zemo:
Yeah, but why did you talk me into selling 'em at $1,200 a bag in July? Boy, did we make a bundle on that deal!
Bubba:
Hey, no one ever said it would be easy...there's no sense of being
pessimistic - it probably wouldn't work anyway!
Zemo:
Well, it WAS an easy decision to go to two volumes on this CPG -
with all the new discoveries reported for the cents and nickels, I'm
glad we agreed to have the first volume cover just the Large Cents
through the Nickels.
Bubba:
Amen, Zemo...if we tried to cram everything into one big book, we'd
have to sell a truss with every copy, and it would look like a pregnant
Breen's Encyclopedia.
Zemo:
I really think the collectors will appreciate that as well. Also,
most will again be printed with the spiral binding, right?
Bubba:
You got it! We'll still have some available in softbound, and I'm
glad you agreed that we should also make some collector's editions
available in hardback and a few with a leather cover.
Zemo:
Sounds great! Tell me again about the size of the book. I get all
warm and fuzzy just thinking about all the new and exciting discoveries
since CPG #3.
Bubba:
Well, the first volume will be 25% larger in listings than CPG #3,
and remember, that's comparing just cents through nickels to the whole
last edition. During the 5-year span between books, we've gotten some
barn-burner new varieties!
Zemo:
Great! I understand that there will be 800+ photos, most of which
will be of higher quality than those in CPG #3?
Bubba:
Yep, Mike Ellis, the President of CONECA, did a super job in
upgrading the photos, adding a lot of indicator arrows, updating
descriptions and prices of the already listed varieties, and did a fine
job in describing the new entries. He spent a lot of time on this, and
we're pleased to list Mike as the editor of this edition.
Zemo:
I agree, he's done a wonderful job, and who better to do the
honors on a book like this? Mike's one of the most knowledgeable
people in the variety area, and I know the readers will appreciate his
fine efforts. Guess that just goes to prove that editing is a REWORDING
activity!
Bubba:
Agreed! Also, besides the 800+ photos, there are 447 variety
listings, including 100 Large, Flying eagle and Indian Cents, 120
Lincoln Cents, 42 Two and Three Cents, 97 Shield Nickels, 52 Liberty and
Buffalos and 36 Jeffersons.
Zemo:
Wow! With all that information for less than half of the
denominations, how much over $100 will the book cost?
Bubba:
How about a $34.95 retail price? At least that's what we're
planning for now. That'll be for either the spiral or softbound
editions, and we still have to get quotes on the hardbound and the
leather copies.
Zemo:
$34.95? Hey, my reality check just bounced! Considering CPG #3
retailed for $29.95, a 17% increase in price for 25% more information,
coupled with updated info & prices and upgraded photos seems like a
pretty good deal to me. Also, I would assume that our costs of
production have increased over the last 5 years as well?
Bubba:
Paper, printing and general economic increases actually dictate that
we should be charging more than the $34.95, but as we discussed, we want
to give the folks a quality product at the lowest possible cost.
Zemo:
I know I'd appreciate that if I were a collector! What's the latest
projected release date?
Bubba:
We'd really like to have it available for shipment by May 31st, so
collectors should watch the trade publications for a special
announcement on how to order their numbered, autograph copies.
Zemo:
Sorry...I just got lost in thought (it was unfamiliar
territory!)...What's the story for Volume 2?
Bubba:
Mike has already started work on it, and it will cover the half
dimes through the gold. We plan to have it ready to ship one year
from the release of this one, on May 31, 2001.
Zemo:
Sounds, Great, Bubba! I know you've put a heckuva lot of time in on
this book, and I really want to thank you and Mike for doing the vast
majority of the work. The old saying really rings true in this
case..."When the chips are down, the buffalo's empty!"
