Bargain Hunting Rare US Gold

February 17, 2025

Since the FUN Show, the rare coin market has been somewhat quiet; the metals market has been a primary source of business for dealers so far this year. With Gold surpassing and hovering around the $2,900 mark, dealers are hopeful that the higher metal prices will bring renewed interest in the rare coin market. The Long Beach Expo is this week February 20-22, and Heritage Auctions will host lot viewing for their official Long Beach Sale which will be held at their Dallas offices the following week.
Over the last five years, prices for United States Gold rarities increased at a phenomenal pace, rising to levels where many collectors thought they would never get another chance to own any of these pieces of history. Until this past year. With further declines in the last few months, prices for rare Gold coins have dropped to a point where some collectors now feel they can jump back into the market. Great Collections, with their weekly auctions, has consistently offered some of the best-known US Gold rarities the market has to offer. From these GC Sunday sales, we have seen numerous rarities find new homes that appear to be reasonably priced compared to higher listed values from past years. Below are some of the important highlights from the Great Collections sales since the first of this year.
1869 $20 Gold certified by PCGS PR66+ DCAM and CAC

The 1869 $20 Gold in Proof had an original mintage of twenty-five coins, but there are just thirteen coins certified in all grades by PCGS and NGC. Further, there may have been resubmissions, and even some overlap from coins that were certified back before the services added the Cameo and Deep Cameo designations. It is understood that this is an exceedingly rare date, and this PR66+ Deep Cameo with CAC approval is the finest certified for the issue. It sold in the January 19th Great Collections sale for $1,372,500.
