NumisMedia Weekly Market Report

Current News and Analysis of the

United States Rare Coin Market

CSNS Sale Produces an Assortment of Hits

May 12, 2025

Despite the recent lower levels in the overall coin market, quality coins are still commanding strong prices as competition among dealers and collectors is maintaining fairly stable levels for rarities. The ups and downs of the metals has had an effect on the rare coin market, and dealers are adapting, balancing inventory for the demands of their customers. Gold reached above the $3,450 mark just a couple of weeks ago only to see it drop and then jump again occasionally. This morning, gold has fallen over $100, so keep an eye on the charts.
As you can see from the selected highlights below, and the prices realized, the Heritage Auctions CSNS Signature Sale had an abundance of great rarities. The overall coin market may have adjusted lower this past year, but the competition is still strong for true rarities, and the extensive array of six figured results shows buyers can still be aggressive for the right coins. There was the typical wide selection of collector coins that were available, check the Heritage Auctions website for the full list of prices realized.
1803 Draped Bust Dollar certified by PCGS PR66

The 1803 Proof Draped Bust Dollar is remarkable in that there were only ten coins minted, and the population reports for PCGS and NGC indicate there are as many as twelve certified in all grades, including the Cameo coins. It is presumed, with numerous resubmissions. there are just four documented coins in all. If true, it makes the 1803 Proof Dollar rarer than the better-known 1804 Dollar which commands a much higher value in the collector market. This 1803 Draped Bust Dollar in PCGS PR66 realized $1,110,000; it previously sold at the Heritage FUN Sale in 2013 for $851,875. With a total of around twenty-five coins known in all grades, the 1801-1804 Bust Dollars will always bring prestige and interest to any major auction.
