COIN MARKET INSIDER'S REPORT is the award-winning column that has run in COINage Magazine monthly since 1974. Its author is David L. Ganz, a New York City lawyer, who for more than 35 years has covered the numismatic marketplace. Besides practicing law, he is a past present of The American Numismatic Association, and served for a dozen years as general counsel to the Professional Numismatists Guild. Appointed by President Nixon to the 1974 Annual Assay Commission, he served (1993-1996) as a Clinton appointee on the Citizens Commemorative Coin Advisory Committee. His latest book, "The Official Guide to America's State Quarters" is a Random House mass market paperback, due out this fall.

The column began with a premise that it could report, telegraph style, about what was going on in the numismatic marketplace and talk about the buys, the sells, and the trades that investors and collectors are interested in. It now includes the internet, and http:// addresses you can hyperlink to, easily. This is an expanded version of the column as it appears in COINage Magazine. Long Beach Expo in June saw a spectacular and active bourse... Heritage sale results were high end...Heritage's June Long Beach Signature Sale realized over $7.1 million, and the 1,800-lot Bullet Auction accounted for another $460,000 in sales... Other highlights: 1895-O dollar MS 65 DMPL $189,750...1914-D Lincoln Cent MS 65 Red PCGS $8,050....1802 Draped Bust Half Dime AU 50 NGC, $64,400.... 1907 High Relief Saint-Gaudens Double Eagle PR 67 NGC, $92,000....

State quarter error price update: NGC-certified Sacagawea dollar/Washington quarter mule traded hands for $56,350... it formerly was an e-Bay item at $41,000...

Heritage Numismatic Auctions, of Dallas will serve as official auctioneer for the American Numismatic Association (ANA) World's Fair of Money 2001 in Atlanta, Georgia.... Selected by the ANA Board of Governors Heritage agreed to pay the ANA $333,334 plus 4 percent of the prices realized above $14 million from the auction in Atlanta in August 2001... Some highlights: proof gold coins, in the Goodus Collection, including an 1893 Liberty double eagle certified PR 65 Ultra Cameo by NGC.... type coins such as a 1795 Flowing Hair half dollar AU 53 NGC ... a 1795 eagle XF 45 PCGS...a 1661 Lord Baltimore Shilling in XF....

Still active and on the job: Jay Johnson, as mint director, who attended the May 21 release of the Rhode Island statehood quarter in Providence.... Summer intern at ANA: Samantha Bobbitt, daughter of PR chief Stephen Bobbitt.... Graduating and getting ready to start high school, Pamela Ganz.... Now driving: big sister Elyse....

U.S. Mint is offering NFTY (pronounced Nifty) a $5,000 cash award to the high school student who comes up with the best marketing proposal for the state quarter program....

Medal collectors take note: part of the Lucien M.LaRiviere Collection sold by Bowers and Merena Galleries' on May 21 became the first collection of American medals to realize more than $1 million at auction. One of the highlights: Betts-593 Daniel Morgan at Cowpens medal from 1781... The record-holding medal is an 1801 Thomas Jefferson Indian Peace medal, was part of LaRiviere's collection sold in March 2001 by Bowers and Merena at $115,000.... The silver Battle of Germantown medal, Betts-556, went for $36,800.. A Zachary Taylor Indian Peace medal from another consignor sold for $25,300....

Stack's sells The Lemus Collection of Rare and High Quality United States Gold Coins June 19-20 in New York.... Superior Galleries sells at auction the Summer 2001 stamp and collectibles auction includes numismatic items (mostly metallic)....

Randy 'L He-dow Teton, the model for the Sacagawea golden dollar, will intern this summer at the American Numismatic Association (ANA) Money Museum.... The 24-year-old Teton is a recent graduate of the University of New Mexico in Albuquerque with a bachelor of fine arts degree in art history and a minor in Native American studies....

According to Michael G. Fahey (who is a senior numismatist at ANACS), the Goodacre Sacagawea dollar coins were not burnished, but probably received special attention (die polishing)..... U.S. Mint's buffalo "nickel" dollar is now available... Pre-sale is $30 Unc, $33 proof and $59.95 for the set, starting June 7th via phone and June 11th via Internet.....

ANA election battle heats up as Will Rossman and John Wilson vie for Prez, and Gary Lewis slugs it out with Alan Herbert for veep.... Lots of ads, and promo, for the candidates... Ballots are already in the mail...

RCC Internet Users Group has joined the ANA as member #197575... They will meet live in Atlanta... No word as to whether it will be simulcast....

To help the ANA and its building fund, St. Martin's Press has donated 500 copies of its 2002 edition of A Guide Book of United States Coins (the "Red Book") to the ANA... a special-issue reference book, signed by Editor Kenneth Bressett and bearing the "Target 2001" building renovation fund logo, will be sold by the ANA for $100 each...

Blue Ridge Numismatic Association celebrates its 40th anniversary... Early reports of Rhode Island coins in circulation are pleased with the appearance... Anticipate a move shortly for a Martin Luther King Jr. commemorative coin set... Also on the horizon: other coins to succeed the 50 state quarter program, now a quarter of the way through....

Bergen Record did a June 4 feature by Ed Reiter on America's state quarters... and a June 5 editorial commending the idea... an important mainstream press item on the series....

President Bush intends to nominate Henrietta Holsman Fore to be Director of the Mint... She is a Bush-I appointee for the Agency of International Development... She has served since 1993 as Chairman and President of Stockton Products, a fabricator of "metal and wire products for the building industry" in Las Vegas, Nevada.... She also serves as Chairman and CEO of Holsman International, a Washington, D.C.-based investment and management company....According to testimony before a House subcommittee, Secretary Paul O'Neil was not a happy camper after visiting the Philadelphia Mint... and he may expect changes....

Congress new changes from the new Democratic Senate... Paul Sarbanes, D-Md., is the new banking chair... Phil Gramm, R-Tx, now is the minority ranking member.... Also changes for appropriations and other mint-related items....
