Larry H. Miller Collection Captivates Morgan Dollar Collectors

Stack's Bowers Galleries hosted another major auction last week with their featured Rarities Night including the Larry H. Miller Collection Part I. Highlighted were many high quality and rare Morgan Dollars, especially in the Miller Collection, that had the Morgan Dollar collectors in a fierce competition for final bids. This sale was held at the Balboa Bay Resort in Newport Beach, California, and as with most recent auctions, had limited in person seating due to the pandemic restrictions.
1886 O Morgan Dollar certified by PCGS MS67 DMPL with CAC
Most Dollar experts agree that this coin is a huge rarity and cannot be duplicated in this ultimate grade. The 1886 O Morgan is generally a weak strike and many have a dull finish. This coin was described by Silver Dollar expert Wayne Miller as "the most spectacular Morgan Dollar now known" and it brought $780,000. The next highest grade certified is MS64 DMPL and there is one in MS65+ certified by PCGS, but not DMPL.

1884 S Morgan Dollar certified by PCGS MS68 with CAC
This is the finest known 1884 S Morgan Dollar and is pedigreed from the George Bodway, Jack Lee, and Larry H. Miller Collections; again on the auction block, this time it sold for $750,000. This coin was also traded many times among dealers in the 1980's, from Tom Tkacz to Chuck Walanka and then to David Hall, before finding its way to George Bodway. There are very few in high grade Mint State with only a PCGS MS67 and an NGC MS66 of note.

1896 S Morgan Dollar certified by PCGS MS69 with CAC
This is as close to perfection as you will ever find in a Morgan Dollar and it realized a whopping $720,000. The next highest grade certified is MS67, one each by PCGS and NGC. The 1896 S had an original mintage of 5,000,000, but Mint State coins above the MS65 grade are rarely seen in today's market.
