Auctions Maintaining Market Momentum

February 7, 2022

Not all sales of great rarities are at auction; the world famous 1794 Silver Dollar just sold for $12 million in a private sale. Granted, the buyer was an auction house, GreatCollections, but the transaction was negotiated by John Albanese, founder of CAC, on behalf of the seller Bruce Morelan. This 1794 Silver Dollar is certified by PCGS SP66 with the CAC approval. It previously sold for slightly over $10 million in 2013, thus becoming the first to break the $10 million mark.
The 1794 now holds the record for being the second highest price paid for a U.S. coin behind the unique 1933 $20 Saint Gaudens that sold last year for nearly $19 million. Ian Russell, President of GreatCollections, also purchased a trio of rarities from Mr. Morelan late last year for $13.35 million; these included the 1913 Liberty Nickel in PCGS PR66 CAC, the 1894 S Barber Dime in PCGS PR65+ CAC, and the 1804 Silver Dollar in PCGS PR65. Since its founding in 2010, GreatCollections is becoming not only a force in the industry as an auction house, it has now transacted many of the greatest U.S. numismatics rarities.
The most recent Legend Rare Coin Auctions, Regency Auction 50, took place in Las Vegas in conjunction with the PCGS Member's Only Show and was met with the usual spirited buying activity that has been on going for over a year now at major auctions. Some of the highlights from the Legend Regency 50 Sale are listed below.
1776 Continental Dollar CURRENCY certified by PCGS MS64 and CAC

Continental Dollars typically attract a lot of interest when up for auction, but this one also has a high grade and a pedigree; it sold for $146,875. This coin was previously owned by the legendary Dr. Jerry Buss who owned the Los Angeles Lakers. It is struck in Pewter and it ranks #10 in the 100 Greatest U.S. Coins, Fourth Edition. A like coin in the same grade sold last year for $150,000 but it did not have the CAC sticker.

1907 $10 Gold Indian Rolled Edge certified by PCGS MS65+ and CAC

With only 42 coins originally minted, the 1907 $10 Gold Indian Rolled Edge is one of the great rarities in this sale. This is the only PCGS MS65+ and it brought $587,500. There are 83 coins total listed in the population reports of PCGS and NGC combined. Obviously, many of these coins have been resubmitted so it is difficult to determine how many there actually are in the upper grades of MS66 and MS67. Currently, the reports show a total of twenty four coins in MS66 to MS67+. The previous high auction price was back in 2020, a PCGS MS67 sold for $576,000.
