Million Dollar Potential in FUN Heritage Auction
January 6, 2025
Most major coin dealers from around the country will be in Florida this week for the 70th Annual FUN Convention. Many have already arrived for setup and dealer to dealer trading, but the show is open to the public January 9-12. The FUN Show is renowned for being the bellwether event on the numismatic calendar and it typically indicates market direction for the upcoming year. With the metals somewhat solid at current levels, dealers should be concentrating on rare coins, but you just never know what the future holds; January typically sees the metals on the rise.
Heritage Auctions continues its long running tradition of hosting the official auction for the FUN Convention; the only difference, nowadays, is that the auction lots are presented for viewing at the show with the actual auction taking place at the Heritage facilities in Dallas the following week. While this may be an exemplary FUN Auction for Heritage, the coins in this sale are an expression of rarity with numerous million-dollar estimated coins up for sale.
1894 S Barber Dime certified by PCGS PR66 and CAC
The 1894 S Barber Dime is one of the "Big 3" of numismatics; the other two are the 1913 Liberty Nickel and the 1804 Dollar. This PCGS PR66 with the CAC approval is tied for the finest known, and there are just nine known examples. This very coin last sold at the 2016 FUN Heritage Sale for $1,997,500; we currently have the value listed at $2,480,000. It also has quite the history, owned at one time by the likes of John M. Clapp and Louis E. Eliasberg Sr. If you are looking for rarity and pedigree, this may be the coin to make you a part of numismatic history.

1927 D $20 Gold St Gaudens certified by PCGS MS65+ and CAC
While the original mintage of the 1927 D $20 St Gaudens was 180,000 coins, there are less than twenty known to exist today. Twelve of those are certified as MS65 and higher with a PCGS MS67 the highest. Four of these coins are in museums and presumably off the market forever. A few are a mystery, unknown for many years, and may not even exist. This leaves maybe ten coins available for trading among the numismatic community. This 1927 D in PCGS MS65+ with CAC approval is currently valued at $2,450,000. This coin has amazing color and a superb strike; it also has a lovely pedigree, previously an important piece in the Fox and Duckor Collections.
