Heritage Sale Outlines Current Market

March 17, 2025

The Long Beach Expo Heritage Auctions sale epitomized the continued trend of price discounting for U.S. coins, throughout all denominations and grades, albeit nominal in some cases. There were still plenty of rarities that brought top dollar; a majority of the high-ticket items were U.S. Gold coins and many of the major highlights from this sale are found in the Twenty Dollar Gold category. The rare Gold coin market may be somewhat lower overall, but the interest in these issues is still quite strong. (This past week Gold finally broke the $3,000 mark but failed to hold and is now $2,997. Silver is currently $33.75.)
The Heritage sale again culminated at their home offices in Dallas, a week after the Long Beach Expo was completed. Auction lots were viewed in Long Beach, where dealers and collectors conducted business for what could be the last show of the year in this location (which was announced by show promoters a few weeks prior to this event). Below is an extensive list of highlights, some photos included, from this most recent Heritage Auctions sale.
1856 O $20 Gold certified by PCGS AU58

The 1856 O $20 Gold is a top rarity, it has the lowest mintage of all the New Orleans Double Eagles; there were 2,250 coins minted and there are less than forty known with recent studies indicating the number may be as few as twenty-five. The AU58 is the highest certified to date although there is a PCGS AU58+ coin included in the population report. There are a total of only twenty-two coins certified in all AU grades, with some assumed resubmissions, making even fewer coins available today. These AU graded coins typically bring well above $275,000 in every major coin auction. This PCGS AU58 comes with a pedigree of Louis E. Eliasberg, Sr. and it sold for $690,000 in this most recent sale. The current FMV is $750,000, which is right in step with the retail value.

1896 S $10 Gold certified by PCGS MS67 and CAC

While the 1896 S $10 Gold has about 130+ coins certified in all Mint State grades up to and including MS63, there are only five coins certified in MS64 and MS65. This PCGS MS67 with the CAC approval is the absolute highest certified by either service, and it sold for $156,000 in this Heritage sale. Interestingly, this very same coin was once certified by NGC as MS68 but later sent to PCGS where it was graded MS67 and then sent on to CAC for their green sticker approval. The current CAC value is now recorded at $179,000.
