Rarities Continue Advance
In the last six months, we have seen quite a rise in early type. For example, Draped Bust Dimes in MS60 had a wholesale market value of $14,250 in early February; this week they rose to $16,500 based on dealer buy prices. We are certain it would take even more to buy one wholesale. Astute collectors are learning what dealers have known for a long time: properly graded early coinage is rare and not easy to locate.
With early type coins becoming hard to find you can forget about the rare issues, they bring records every time they are offered for sale. A look at the recent sales in the Husak Collection of Large Cents has resulted in many changes in our price guides. Many of the prices of the higher grades have increased substantially and we were also able to list many new prices for grades that were previously unreported. The 1807 Large 7/6 is now listed at $45,000 in MS65.
The stock market continues to influence the coin market. With so many investors sitting on the sidelines with cash in hand, they are seeing opportunities in rare coins. This creates more demand for rare issues. The news that J P Morgan Chase & Co. is buying Bear Stearns & Co. with the help of the government could impact the coin business even more. As of 9:40 am PDT, Gold is $1011.50 and Silver is $20.49. Platinum is down dramatically at $1979.
