Market Strong as Long Beach Nears

The Long Beach Expo is just a week away and already dealers from out of town are in the Southern California area. Three times a year the Expo attracts an enormous number of dealers to Long Beach for trading at local coin shops and bidding at major auctions. Ira and Larry Goldberg will conduct their sale from May 25th – 28th; Superior Galleries will host an Elite Sale on May 26th & 27th; and the official Long Beach Sale will be conducted by Heritage Auction Galleries from May 28th – 30th. There are hundreds of great numismatic rarities in these sales that are sure to attract dealers and collectors in this sizzling market.

The market for Early Type Coins continues to move higher as evident in this week’s Wholesale Market Price Guide. Bust Half Dimes and Dimes from 1794 to 1807 are attracting many buyers for just about any grades as long as the coins are problem free. Most recorded sales typically have been higher than the current Market price at the time of the sale. Much of the activity for Bust Half Dimes and Dimes from 1809 to 1837 has been for grades MS63 and higher. However, we are still finding steady demand for the lower grades at current levels.

Seated coins remain high on want lists in grades MS63 and higher. Collectors and dealers are looking for coins that previously were considered Type for the series. The census reports reveal fewer of these coins are available due to the number of coins certified in specific grades. For example, a Seated Dime may have had an original mintage of 3,000,000 coins but the census reports show that there are only a pool of 100 coins certified in MS65 and higher grades. Low census numbers are a strong indicator of collector demand.
