Liberty Head Nickel Auction Closes at $3,737,500
The FUN Convention was full of good news this past week, not the least of which was the exceptional auction hosted by Heritage Galleries in Orlando. From Half Cents to $20 Gold, there was something for everyone. The show had great attendance by dealers and the public. Better yet, collectors were there to spend money for coins they need. Even bullion cooperated and maintained higher levels throughout the week. Gold is up again this morning, now over $1,150 an ounce.
The Heritage Auction contained numerous highlights but the 1913 Liberty Head Nickel was a rare opportunity for the advanced collector to obtain a coin that is coveted by every numismatist. This coin was certified by NGC as PR64 and realized $3,737,500. The 1927 D Saint is rare by mintage and quality, graded MS66 by PCGS, and sold for $1,495,000. According to the population reports, there are only eight coins certified as MS66 with just one higher. These two coins helped put the Orlando Sale over $36,000,000 in total prices realized.
This week's Moderns Wholesale Market Dealer Price Guide contains few changes in most series from Lincoln Cents to Presidential Dollars. Most issues are steady at present levels, although we do not see much in the way of new buyers at this time for the more common coins. Highest grades still command attention, but may be lower if the populations are steadily rising. Modern Platinum coins are generally higher this week, but the Gold Eagles are mixed even though Gold is higher. The premiums for Proof Gold Eagles continue to soften; teletype dealers have lowered their Market prices to $1,750 per ounce.
