NumisMedia Weekly Market Report
July 26, 2010
ANA Coming to Boston
The ANA in Boston is just a few weeks away and dealers are hopeful that it will be well attended and the market will show improvement. Heritage Galleries is the official auctioneer for this year's event. There are so many highlights for this fabulous sale that it takes two massive catalogues. There is a terrific selection of Carson City Double Eagles along with thousands of other lots. This is sure to be another successful auction for Heritage.
The summer months and the excessive quantities of some coins are creating minor softness in the collector market. This is not to say that coins are weak; there are many buyers for a majority of rare coins when on the market at current levels. However, most of these types of coins are typically priced above FMV so they may sit in dealer inventories. There are various decreases for Buffalo Nickels and Mercury Dimes in this week's LD Wholesale Market Dealer Price Guide. Many dates have quantities available throughout the marketplace. Buyers can be very selective for these coins and will pick the nicest for the best price. This means dealers have to be very competitive if they want to sell these more common coins.
Key date coins have increased in value over the last several years so it makes them ideal for profit taking. However, in some cases, there have been so many coins available in the last year that a seller must discount them in order to attract a buyer. For example, the 1937 D 3 Legged Buffalo Nickel is lower this week in all grades from VF to AU55. We have monitored the sale of at least 40 coins over the last few months. In Mercury Dimes, the 1942/1 and 1942/1 D are lower in VF to AU53. Again, there have been numerous examples sold over the last couple of months. The good news is that all these key date coins will still attract very interested buyers at levels very close to the listed Market price.
