NumisMedia Weekly Market Report
May 16, 2011
Large Cents, Seated Liberties Advance
There appears to be no rhyme or reason for determining the direction of the metals of late. Sure there are technical explanations, but the daily grind has led to a wait-and-see attitude for most buyers. Many analysts still believe that this is more profit taking than a downward trend and, once stability sets in, new highs will be forthcoming. In the meantime, bags of circulated Silver Dollars are trading in the $31,000 to $32,000 range and 90% Silver bags are wholesaling for $24,475.
Despite the unsteadiness in the metals, the overall coin market looks very active. Buyers seem to be focused on coins minted prior to 1900 with Seated Liberty Dimes, Quarters, and Halves strengthening. Better to rare dates within these series are very strong when offered in auctions and will bring premiums of current Market when the coins are premium quality. For common dates, buyers are looking for mostly MS63 and higher graded coins with good eye appeal. The 1881 Seated Dime is a very tough coin to find at a reasonable price. All the circulated grades are higher this week up to MS64. We are quite sure the MS65 and higher coins would also command premiums if they became available.
The 1867 S Seated Quarter is quite rare and elusive in Mint State grades. This week's LD Wholesale Market Dealer Price Guide indicates a higher Market in MS63 and MS64 at $19,000 and $24,500, respectively. Many Large Cent prices have advanced for coins we don't see very often. The 1810 in MS63 Brown is now up to $11,500 and the MS64 is $17,500. The 1793 Chain Cent AMERI. variety is higher at $37,500 in VF20. Many other specific varieties have advanced in grades from Fine to AU50.
