Market Cools as Summer Begins

As summer approaches, the coin market appears to be rather calm. Despite the constant activity in metals, most dealers are reporting a slight downturn in sales. Premiums remain smaller than usual which favors the buyers in this market. Overall prices for Gold, Silver and Platinum related coins have retreated since last month's Moderns Wholesale Market Dealer Price Guide. There seems to be more supplies on the market than current demand.

Dealers still have marketing programs in the works but wholesale prices for Morgan and Peace Dollars have fallen in the last few weeks, while Walkers appear to be generally steady at current levels. Modern Silver and Gold Eagles are very active, but lower as well. Proof Silver Eagles are now trading among dealers near the $65 mark and the Proof Gold Eagles are $1,640 per ounce. These require the original government package at these levels. Dealers are trading Silver Dollar bags at $30,000 and 90% silver bags at $25,550.

One area of bullion that appears to be very competitive right now is the Spouse $10 Gold from 2008 to date. There are numerous increases for MS and Proof coins and most buyers will take them in the original packaging or in 69 and 70 grades. The 2009 W J. Tyler has jumped to $1,375 in Ultra Cameo PR69 and $1,550 in PR70. Another strong move has been made by the 2008 W Van Buren in PR69 at $1,275 and $1,475 in PR70. This week's chart for Proof and Mint Sets has many declines due to lower silver prices in the last three weeks. Several of the sets that contain silver coins are lower throughout. Many of these sets had moved much higher as silver approached the recent $50 mark.
