NumisMedia Weekly Market Report
August 8, 2011
Gold Up Sharply
The metals are very strong this morning with Gold having hit the $1,700 mark in overseas trading. Proof Silver Eagles are now trading at $60 among dealers as long as they have the original packaging and Proof Gold Eagles wholesale at $1,820 per ounce.
Prices are mostly stable for collector coins but it may be difficult to purchase nice coins at these current levels. Most dealers are not raising their buy prices but are willing to pay premiums when sellers have the right coins for sale. This seller's market is ideal for dealers that have quality coins for sale. In this week's LD Wholesale Market Dealer Price Guide the majority of prices are unchanged as dealers are focusing on the upcoming auctions at the ANA. Heritage Auctions and Stack's Bowers Galleries has some tremendous coins up for sale and competition is sure to be very aggressive.
There appears to be renewed interest in Barber Quarters. We have monitored many trades in MS63 through MS65 over the last few weeks. The MS63 Market price moved to a higher $360. Standing Liberty Quarters also show increased activity as of late. Including the Full Head coins, buyers are looking for MS64 and higher grades. The rare grades, especially in Full Head are very difficult to find. The 1921 FH advanced to $3,475 in MS66 this week. Half and Large Cents are still in strong hands and only higher prices will bring out any of the true rarities in these series. The rare 1796 Reverse of 1797 Large Cent in MS63 increased to $7,950 in this week's LD.
