NumisMedia Weekly Market Report
Heritage Long Beach Sale Realizes Nearly $17.5 Million
October 7, 2013
Heritage U.S. Coins Signature Auction in Long Beach, CA, September 25-29, 2013
|
The recent Long Beach Expo was characterized as 'one of the best Long Beach Shows in a long time'. The attendance was better than any show in the last five years and many were there to see some remarkable exhibits; included were the S.S. Central America 'Ship of Gold' and the ANA Road Show that featured the 1804 Dollar and the 1913 Liberty Head Nickel. On Saturday, there were several Los Angeles Dodgers signing autographs including Tommy Lasorda. With all the added events, many dealers said that retail was an improvement over previous shows.
The dealer to dealer business was mostly active and the only drawback was the fluctuating metals market; but some buyers seemed to be taking advantage of these lower prices. Gold is currently up from recent lows at $1,322.20 and Silver is $22.35.
The Heritage Signature Sale was another upbeat event. With hundreds of thousands of potential internet bidders, even when the auction room appears marginally occupied, there are millions of dollars in bids being executed. This sale contained the New York Collection of 1864 L Indian Cents. This is truly the rarest of the Proof Indian Cents series and with three coins available there was certain to be a frenzy. The PR66 Brown certified by PCGS with a CAC sticker brought $129,250; the PR64 Red PCGS sold for $123,375; and the PR65 Red NGC realized $141,000.
With final numbers in, the total prices realized for this event was nearly $17.5 million. There were numerous other highlights, some of which are listed below. Please contact Heritage Galleries for complete prices realized.
