NumisMedia Weekly Market Report
Heritage Auctions Realize $16.9 Million at Long Beach
June 9, 2014
Several dealers voiced the opinion that this was one of their best Long Beach Shows ever. It also appeared to be one of the largest that we can remember in the last twenty years. The bourse room was full most of the time and dealers reported an unusual amount of retail sales to the public. Of course we heard the usual complaint that there was not enough new material. But this can be typical of most shows with newer supplies selling early on leaving dealers with their older inventory to market.
The show was also boosted by the Heritage Auction which contained an amazing array of rarities that attracted some phenomenal bids. The 1912 $20 Saint Gaudens in PCGS PR67 with a CAC sticker brought $193,875. There were only 74 coins minted and only one certified in this grade by PCGS. NGC has certified 12 coins in PR67 with one in PR68*. CAC has approved just two coins in PR67. We previously noted the CAC Market value at $150,000 which is sure to increase.

Another very remarkable coin in this sale was the always popular 1889 CC Morgan Dollar in PCGS MS64. This coin was well struck with no major distractions and the final price realized was $105,750, well above the previous Market price of $72,500. With only 74 coins combined by PCGS and NGC in MS64 this date seems to attract higher prices every time it is available, especially when it is this nice. The following list shows some of the other highlights from this major Heritage Auction.

The majority of adjustments in this week's Wholesale Market Dealer Price Guide can be found in the $20 Gold Liberty chart. While generics drifted lower over the past few weeks, the better dates have been in strong demand. At least 33 different dates of TI and TII Liberties are showing increases in various grades from VF to MS64. For example, the 1854 S in MS62 is up to $22,250 Market, 1857 O in AU53 is higher at $14,500, and the 1867 in MS63 is now at $20,500. Many of these dates were in tremendous demand at the Long Beach Expo.
