Heritage Sale Total Near $7 Million in Long Beach

The Long Beach Expo attracted a large crowd throughout the length of the show; however, it is readily apparent that dealers are not getting enough fresh material to satisfy current demand. This is not to say that dealers are running out of coins, it is just that many inventories contain much of the same common coins. Nevertheless, better and rare date coins are still in demand which is evident by the extensive dealer want lists, but one needed to look no further than the rarities that were available in the sale hosted by Heritage Auctions at Long Beach.
The Heritage Auctions sale realized $6,928,019 which is quite a bit of money when you consider that it did not contain as many great rarities as in recent sales. The highlight coin was the 1869 $20 Gold in NGC PR65 Ultra Cameo that brought $229,125. There were only 25 coins struck and only seven of them are listed as Deep Cameo or Ultra Cameo. Another rarity in this sale was the 1920 S $20 Saint Gaudens which could not quite break the $100,000 mark; it was certified by PCGS as MS64 and sold for $99,875. This is one of just 20 coins certified in MS64 by PCGS and NGC combined and there are only eight certified higher. With Gold fluctuating up and down over the last three weeks, this latest issue of the Moderns Wholesale Market Dealer Price Guide shows an excess of changes for modern bullion coins. The $50 Gold Eagle in MS69 is higher at $1,310 Market and the PR69 is up to $1,450. However, the premium for the Proof Gold Eagle has fallen over the last three months about $75. This is an indication of cooling demand for the Proof issues. Demand for Buffalo Gold continues to attract traders, especially for the newer issues. The 2012 PR70 $50 Buffalo maintains a strong premium with the Market currently at $1,725.
