NumisMedia Weekly Market Report
Better Copper Active, Prices Rising
May 4, 2015
After a brief downturn at the end of last week, the metals are trying to surge forward again. Gold is back up to $1,190 in morning trading and Silver is $16.56. Platinum is currently $1,149 which is still well under Gold. Bags of 90% Silver are trading at $12,485 and circulated Silver Dollars are $24,750 per bag of 1,000 VG's. Proof Gold Eagles are wholesaling at $1,370 per ounce in the OGP and Proof Silver Eagles are $46.
In this week's LD Wholesale Market Dealer Price Guide there are adjustments in most of the charts. Early Copper remains in demand especially for the dates infrequently offered for sale. When made available, they can command sizable premiums. For example, the 1795 Lettered Edge with Pole Half Cent jumped in AU50 & 53 this week to $5,875 and $6,350 Market.
There are many other significant increases throughout the Large Cents chart. The 1793 Vine & Bars Wreath Cent moved higher in several grades beginning with AU50 at $22,250 and ending with MS60 at $36,750. Also, the 1793 Lettered Edge Wreath Cent advanced in AU50 to $23,500, as well as some of the lower grades.
Lincoln Cents still represent a large collector base and activity remains constant. While the majority of prices are steady, there are a number of increases in the updated chart. The 1909 S in MS65 & 66 Red are both higher at $1,050 and $2,650, respectively. The 1910 S in MS65 Red is up to $685 Market and the 1914 D, always a popular date, is higher in MS65 RB, now at $8,850. Other dates experiencing an upswing are the 1914, 1915, and 1917 in MS66 Red, along with the 1918 D in MS65 RB and the 1921 in MS67 Red.
Next week the Eugene H. Gardner Collection Part III goes up for auction in New York. Heritage Auctions hosts another thriller in a long line of recent amazing sales. While there will be one more Gardner Sale later this year, it will contain duplicates and upgrades that were not part of the core collection; this is the last portion of the main collection that housed numerous important rarities.
Included in this sale is an 1838 O Reeded Edge Half Dollar in NGC PR64 with the CAC label. This coin came out of the Eliasberg Collection and is tied with one other coin as the finest known. Another super rarity available is the 1870 S Seated Dollar in PCGS XF40. This will be a rare opportunity to acquire a coin with less than 10 confirmed survivors. This coin has a current Market of $565,000. Below are a few other rarities from this historic sale.
