Early Twenties Highlight Stack's Bowers Sale

Last week's auction at the Whitman Baltimore Expo hosted by Stack's Bowers Galleries featured the second finest PCGS Registry Set of $20 Gold. The Fairmont Collection of Liberty Head Double Eagles, from 1850 through 1907 with circulation strikes, included many of the rarest dates in this series. The star of this collection was the 1861 S Paquet in PCGS AU53 CAC which sold for $96,000; this coin is one of 24 coins certified in this grade with just 32 grading higher, and only one of those ranks at the highest of NGC AU58+.

There were plenty of other highlights from the Fairmont Collection. The 1857 O in PCGS MS60 brought $78,000; there are only three coins certified in MS60 and another three grading as high as MS63. The 1859 O in PCGS AU53 realized $66,000, a strong premium above the current NumisMedia Market price. There are 18 coins certified in AU53 with another 29 in higher AU grades. There are just two coins certified in the highest grade of MS60.

The market for early Proof Lincoln Cents is mixed. This week the 1913 in PR67 RB is higher at $5,150 Market and the 1916 in PR65 RB is up to $4,975. However, the 1909 in PR65 Red is lower at $1,725, while the 1915 in PR66 RB is down to $3,200.
Early Washington Quarters are being discounted with lower prices for the 1932 in MS67 down to $19,500 Market and the 1932 S in MS65 lower at $2,750. Also declining are the 1939 S in MS67 now at $585 and the 1944 S in MS68 now at $3,450.
