NumisMedia Weekly Market Report
Here Comes the FUN 2019
January 7, 2019
Dealers are in Orlando, Florida this week for the 64th Annual FUN Convention, a show that typically sets the stage for the coin industry in the new year. With the metals advancing on a regular basis over the last couple of weeks and prices in many series appearing to be much more stable, the market is looking stronger going into 2019 and dealers are anticipating a bounce back year beginning with the FUN Show.
Heritage Auctions is hosting the official FUN Sale and there are some spectacular one-of-a-kind coins that will surely attract aggressive bidding. The 1793 Large Cent Chain AMERI. in PCGS MS64+ Brown with the CAC sticker is described as the second finest known. The NumisMedia CAC value is at $470,000. This coin has a current online bid of over $800,000 and the final sale is not until Thursday January 10.

Also available to bidders are two remarkable Trade Dollars. The 1884 Trade Dollar NGC PR66 CAC has a mintage of just 10 coins. The current NumisMedia CAC value for the PR66 is $1,060,000, however, a PCGS PR65 CAC sold at the January 2014 FUN Sale for $998,750, although the overall coin market was healthier back then.

The last 1885 Trade Dollar sold was by Heritage privately in 2006 for $3.3 million. Below are some of the other potential highlights from this outstanding Heritage FUN Show sale.

The teletypes are active with many dealers venturing back into the market after a long holiday. Gold is higher at $1,287 in morning trading and Silver is at $15.70. One ounce Proof Gold Eagles are trading at $1,330 and Proof Silver Eagles are $38 in the OGP. Circulated Silver Dollars in VG or higher are trading at $20,525 per bag and 90% Silver is $11,145. BU rolls of 90% Silver are wholesaling at $130 per $10 roll.
While this week's LD Price Guide continues the trend of declines in most series, it is now more a matter of dealers trying to get rid of old inventory. Dealers are anticipating the market to reverse in the first quarter of the year with more stable prices and then some areas of advancement. For now, the Indian Cents chart is covered with minus signs, especially for the MS64 & MS65 grades. The 1867 MS65 Red is down to $4,725 Market and the 1872 MS64 Red is lower at $3,850. Lincoln Cents are following the same pattern in the same grades. The 1914 D in MS64 RB has fallen to $3,725 and the 1924 S in MS65 RB is lower at $2,025.
