Legend Sets the Tone for Long Beach

Dealers and collectors are in Southern California this week with the Long Beach Expo starting Thursday, Wednesday for dealers. The week began in Beverley Hills for a two-day sale that ends today hosted by Legend Rare Coin Auctions, and bidders so far have been very competitive.
One of the early highlights from the first session of the Regency Auction 30 was a 1909 D $20 Gold St. Gaudens in PCGS MS67 CAC that was formerly from the Eliasberg and Duckor collections. This is the finest known and the only one with the CAC sticker, and it brought $329,000. The current NumisMedia CAC value is $350,000.

Another former Eliasberg coin, the 1896 O Barber Half Dollar in PCGS MS67 CAC sold for $123,375. This is the finest known coin for the date and the NumisMedia CAC value is only at $85,000. Even though there were over 900,000 coins originally minted, there are very few available in high grades with only a total of 15 in MS65 and higher.
Also sold from the partial set of finest known Barber Half Dollars, the 1895 S in PCGS MS67 CAC was a coin that previously came from the Duckor collection. This Barber Half brought $85,188 and the NumisMedia CAC value is currently at just $42,500. Below are a few of the other highlights in the sale, as of this morning. Heritage Auctions will host the official auction for the Long Beach Expo with many highlighted rarities on the block. The 1879 $4 Gold Flowing Hair Stella in PCGS PR64 Deep Cameo CAC is available to bidders with a current NumisMedia CAC value of $248,000. This is one of just 8 coins certified in this grade although there are another 27 coins certified higher.

The always popular 1915 S $50 Gold Panama-Pacific Round in PCGS MS64 is also available with a current Market value of $107,500. While this coin has nearly 250 coins certified in this grade, there were only 483 originally minted. Results from this sale will be covered in next week's Market Report.
Last week Gold topped the $1,300 mark and so far in morning trading the price has held. Currently at $1,303.50, dealers are hopeful the metals hold strong for the Long Beach show. Proof one ounce Gold Eagles in OGP are wholesaling at $1,340 and Proof Silver Eagles are in the $39-$40 range. Silver bags are trading at $11,175 and Silver Dollars are $20,550 per bag of 1,000.
