Rare $5 Gold Highlight Rarities Night
February 25, 2019
Stack's Bowers Galleries will host the official auction at the Whitman Baltimore Expo this week. Rarities Night will include several coins infrequently seen, presenting a great opportunity for buyers. Early $5 Gold varieties are popular and one of the tougher dates is available, the 1797/5 Large Eagle in NGC MS61. This is one of about 20 known with only 10 coins certified by PCGS and NGC combined. There is one in a higher grade of PCGS MS62+, selling for over $223,000 back in 2015. The current Market price for the MS61 is $155,000.

With Gold and the other metals remaining solid over the last month, bullion trading has been on the rise as dealers have increased their buying and selling activity. The premium for Proof one ounce Gold Eagles has diminished of late, but they are still wholesaling at about $1,360 with Gold at $1,326.50 this morning. The Proof Silver Eagles have moved higher, now at $41 in OGP. With Silver at $15.90 90%, Silver bags are trading at $11,175 and Silver Dollar bags at $20,525 in VG+.
Many of the generics in all of the Gold charts are increasing this week while some of the better dates are showing some promise. Most of the increases in the better date gold coins are very specific to the date and grade, where values are tending to rise as an unusual date becomes available. The 1871 $2½ Gold in MS64 advanced to $7,475 Market and the 1844 $5 Gold in MS63 climbed to $9,150.
In $20 Gold this week, the 1857 O in MS60 increased to $42,500 with just 6 coins certified in Mint State, MS63 the highest. And the 1865 S in MS66 jumped to $38,750 with only 3 coins certified in this highest grade.
