NumisMedia Weekly Market Report
Lower Gold Creating Competitive Premiums
April 1, 2019
The official auction at the just completed ANA National Money Show, held in Pittsburgh, was hosted by Kagin's Inc. Kagin's is renowned for their expertise in Territorial and Pioneer minted coins. Highlighted at this sale was the 1860 Clark, Gruber & Co. $20 Gold Pike's Peak, a Rarity 6+ with the Reeded Edge and certified by PCGS. There are just 9 of these coins certified by PCGS, the highest grade is MS61. This coin is described as "Graffiti AU Detail", with slight scratching on the reverse, yet bidders apparently did not feel too concerned with the description as it sold for $180,000.

Gold has slipped back under $1,300, now at $1,290 in morning trading; but with lower Gold comes the opportunity for buyers to take advantage of lower premiums. The spreads in $20 Gold between the grades of AU50 and MS62 are a mere $35.
This week, the Indian Cent and Lincoln Cent charts are cluttered with price increases offsetting some minor decreases. The 1860 Indian Cent in MS66 is up to $2,175 Market and the 1864 L RB in the same grade is higher at $2,825. This is most interesting because the Red coin has a current Market value of $19,750, so the RB appears to be a good value especially if it is more Red than Brown. It also depends on the population for both the RB versus the Red.
The 1909 S VDB Lincoln Cent in grades MS64 and MS65 seem reasonably priced compared to the next higher grade. The MS65 RB is higher at $2,450 Market and the MS64 & MS65 Red are both up at $2,150 and $3,825, respectively. However, another rare date, the 1914 D in MS65 RB is slightly lower this week at $7,375.
