One of the highlights in the table above, the 1911 D $2 ½ Gold Indian NGC MS64 which sold for $13,800, is a rare date and typically popular with collectors and dealers. However, over the last several years the value has steadily dropped due to decreased demand and an abundance in dealer inventories. The MS64 grade has over 700 coins certified between PCGS and NGC, so there are plenty available and must be reasonably priced to attract buyers. The MS64 has fallen from $23,250 Market in early 2010 to the current value of $15,250. From a retail standpoint, a potential buyer in today's market stands to gain a substantial profit if this coin can make a comeback to anywhere near its previous high.
The current overall market is showing more stability with fewer declines and an increase in the number of advances. One area that is still somewhat soft is the Buffalo Nickel series. There are numerous declines in MS65 & MS66 but it seems like much of this is a result of coins that are less than the best for the grade. In other words, if you have high-end coins for the grade they are more likely to bring the current listed levels; quality speaks for itself.
Gold has been steady, above the $1,400 mark, and has spurred more purchases from the public. One ounce Proof Gold Eagles are up to $1,440 in OGP. Proof Silver Eagles are $39 between dealers. Premiums are firm for ninety percent silver coins as physical demand is on the rise. Bags are trading at $10,765 and VG Silver Dollars wholesale at $18,150. In morning trading Gold is $1,412.50 and Silver is $15.30.
