ANA Brings Out the Rarities
August 19, 2019
The considerable price drops over the last several years for rare coins has not gone unnoticed by dealers and collectors. At the just completed ANA event in Rosemont, many of those dealers and collectors were on hand looking to take advantage of discounted prices. The two official ANA auctions provided bidders with a wide selection of rarities, however those looking to purchase one of these rare coins at a discount of the listed FMV may have found some strong competition, especially for the top selections.
The absolute highlight of the Stack's Bowers Galleries portion of the ANA auctions was the 1894 S Barber Dime in PCGS PR63 CAC, the only coin certified by PCGS in this grade, and it brought $1,320,000. There are 6 certified higher although some of those could be resubmissions. This coin would certainly be the centerpiece of any collection and is typically mentioned in the same breath as the 1913 Liberty Head Nickel and the 1804 Dollar.

The Anthony J. Taraszka collection of 1795 to 1804 $10 Gold Eagles in the Stack's Bowers Sale contained many rarities not seen in years. The 1795 $10 Gold Capped Bust with 9 Leaves in PCGS MS63 realized $630,000; seems like a bargain compared to the Pogue coin with the same grade that sold for over 1 million dollars in 2015. However that coin also had the + designation and is considered the finest known to date. Below are some of the many other rarities that sold in the Stack's Bowers Galleries Auction at the ANA.
