Gold Rarities Top Legend Auction

Legend held their latest auction at the PCGS Members Only Show in New Orleans last week, featuring their Regency Sale which was made up of five specialty collections, all assembled by Legend. There was no shortage of superb quality rarities; the 1879 $4 Gold Stella Flowing Hair in PCGS PR66 Cameo with the CAC sticker brought $270,250, which was $20,000 over the pre-sale estimate. There are 31 coins certified in this grade with only 8 having the CAC approval.

From the Coronet Gold Collection, the 1827 $5 Gold certified as PCGS MS64 CAC sold for $135,125. This is the only coin certified in this grade with the CAC sticker and there are just 2 coins graded higher at PCGS, a 65+ and a 66.

Another remarkable collection from this sale, dubbed the 'CC Collection That Should Not Exist', consisted of 17 Carson City Silver Dollars that all had deep toning and were as well matched as possible. It included both 1879 CC Dollars and the 1890 CC Tail Bar, along with the 1900 O/CC. The 17 coins brought nearly $420,000.
