Whitman Baltimore Expo Canceled, Stack's Bowers Sale Relocated

March 23, 2020

The coronavirus is taking its toll around the world, not only threatening lives, but also making everyday life very difficult. The government is shutting down almost any business that attracts a crowd, including sporting events, restaurants, and schools; every effort is being made to limit losses. Over the last few weeks the stock market has crashed and even the Feds lowering interest rates has not helped overall. Currently the Dow is down under the 19,000 mark and oil is at $23 a barrel; however, the metals have finally made a major move in morning trading with Gold up over $50, currently at $1,558. With such big moves taking place, make sure you check all prices before making final deals.
The Whitman Baltimore Expo was canceled by the city of Baltimore because of the crowd limitations and the Stack's Bowers Galleries auction was transferred to their California offices. While it is difficult to host a coin show without dealers and collectors participating, an auction can commence through the efficiency of the internet. The importance of this sale is highlighted by the inclusion of the D. Brent Pogue Collection Part VII. While the Pogue Sale had numerous extreme rarities, the top seller was the 1854 S $5 Gold in PCGS AU58+ CAC, which brought $1,920,000. This is the finest of 3 known examples of this super rarity that carries a pedigree of Eliasberg and F. C. C. Boyd prior to being added to the Pogue Collection.

A second rarity which is usually the highlight of most sales was the 1804 Dollar certified by PCGS as PR55 Restrike Class III which sold for $1,440,000; there are just 14 known examples in all classes. The strong demand for these rare coins proves that significant competition will be the driving force when the top rarities are offered.
