NumisMedia Weekly Market Report

Rarities Still Bringing Top Dollar

June 15, 2020

The June Long Beach Convention was another in the long line of coin shows canceled over the past three months. Heritage Auctions typically hosts a major sale at the Long Beach shows, but the scheduled auction was instead held at their new Dallas offices adjacent to the Dallas Fort Worth International Airport. Without the added attendance from a major show, these remote auctions should suffer somewhat. While this may be the case with some of the lower valued coins, it is certainly not when it comes to the rarities.
1933 $10 Gold Indian in PCGS MS65 brought $408,000. This is a very popular date with a total of only 12 coins certified in the MS65 grade. There are only two grading higher in MS66, one each by PCGS and NGC. There were over 300,000 coins originally minted, but with the 1933 recall of Gold coins, the majority were melted. It is estimated that there are only 30-40 coins that still exist. The overall populations for PCGS and NGC total just 36 certified in all grades and none below the MS62 grade, with duplicate submissions of the same coin most likely creating the larger total.

1907 $10 Gold Indian with Rolled Edge in PCGS MS65 brought $240,000. With just 42 coins originally minted this is an extremely rare date. There are only 27 coins certified in the MS65 grade, however, there are 24 grading higher with MS67+ the highest. With so many high grades, the small original mintage must not have gone unnoticed by the collectors of the time. Below are some of the other highlights from the Long Beach Auction held by Heritage in Dallas.

After showing a month of strength the metals have suddenly begun to fall, and could be headed lower according to more than one analyst. In morning trading Gold was nearing $1,700 but has rebounded to the current $1,728 level. The metals have been rather sensitive to world events, another consideration for buyers and sellers before making their buy/sell decisions. Silver was nearing $18.50 two weeks ago but has since dropped to $17.45. Keep a close watch on these markets.
