NumisMedia Weekly Market Report
1822 $5 Gold Rarity Available in Stack's Bowers Vegas Sale
March 22, 2021
The latest Stack's Bowers Galleries auction is being held this week in conjunction with the PCGS Members Only Show at the Bellagio Hotel in Las Vegas. This major auction was moved from the Whitman Baltimore Show which was canceled due to the covid restrictions. Bidding activity continues to be quite impressive in these major auctions even with the venue changes, mainly because there are still so many top rarities in these sales, but also dealers and collectors have become accustomed to internet and phone bidding during the pandemic.
1822 $5 Gold Capped Bust certified by PCGS AU50
There are just three examples known to exist today and this is the only coin certified by either grading service. Most recently this coin was sold from the D. Brent Pogue Collection but also has a provenance of Virgil Brand and Louis Eliasberg. The current NumisMedia Market value is $5 million. It does seem strange that a coin with an original mintage of over 17,000 is now so rare that there is only one available to collectors. Government melting is surely the reason but it is amazing that no others have turned up in all these years.

1797 Draped Bust Half Dollar Small Eagle 15 Stars certified by PCGS MS66 and CAC
This is considered the finest known of this date with only about 150 examples out of an original mintage of 2,984. This coin was also sold in a Stack's Bowers Sale, as part of the 2015 Pogue Auction Part 1, when it realized a little over $1.5 million. The current NumisMedia CAC value is listed at $1,870,000.

1845 O $2.5 Gold certified by PCGS MS63
This is the Virgil Brand coin and is the finest known available. This date has an original mintage of 4,000 but there are probably less than 100 known today. Our current Market value is just $35,500, however, this coin will most likely result in a record price with several collectors looking to add this rarity to their collections. This may not be the highest valued coin in this sale but it could wind up with the most bidding activity. More potential highlights from this Stack's Bowers Galleries sale are listed below.
