$18+ Million Record Sale for the 1933 $20 Saint

June 14, 2021

Sotheby's has sold the 1933 $20 Saint Gaudens again. This is the only example of the 1933 $20 Saint that is legally authorized by the U.S. Government. It sold this time for $18,872,250. While this coin is not in a certified holder, it has been certified on several occasions by PCGS as MS65 and it was also approved by John Albanese at CAC. This coin came from the collection of Stuart Weitzman who purchased it in the 2002 Sotheby's sale for $7.59 million. This is truly a unique coin and can only be owned by one entity at a time; there are no others to collect.

Historical data from the U.S. Mint for the 1933 $20 Saint Gaudens indicates that there were over 400,000 coins originally minted, however, none were released into circulation. At the time, in 1933, a Presidential order was issued preventing banks from releasing the 1933 $20 coins. Two of the coins were sent to the Smithsonian and the rest were designated to be melted. Yet, we know that at least a total of eleven coins missed the melting pot, the current coin, which last sold by Sotheby's in 2002, and another ten coins that were later found in a safe deposit box in a bank in Philadelphia. The latter ten coins were deemed illegal in a court of law and confiscated by the U.S. Government.

Internet bidding was in full swing for last week's Stack's Bowers Galleries Sale from their headquarters in California with some very impressive coins and prices realized. There were numerous highest graded Walkers sold, in grades MS67 & MS68, most with the + and or CAC. Serious money was bid on these top graded coins and the competition created some record prices.

1943 Walking Liberty Half Dollar certified by PCGS MS68+ and CAC

This is the finest recorded Walker for this date; there is one other coin listed in PCGS MS68, but it does not have the CAC approval. This coin brought $120,000, way above our listed price; many of these top grade Walkers brought record prices.

This 1944 Walker is one of the highest graded by PCGS at MS68; this one has the CAC approval, and there are no + certified coins for this grade and there are none graded higher. This coin realized $84,000, again, above most pre-auction estimates.        After several weeks of strong prices and activity, the metals have taken a hit in the last few trading sessions and Gold fell to under $1,850 in morning trading, and Silver was at $27.75. However, a strong rebound now has Gold at $1,865 and Silver up for the day at $27.95. This week should be interesting are we headed lower or is this a great buying opportunity.
