NumisMedia Weekly Market Report
Summer FUN Stoked by Strong Metals and Lower Premiums
July 12, 2021
The Summer FUN Show came along at the right time, with restrictions being lifted, the metals healthy and on the rise, premiums tightening up so prices are more advantageous for the retail buyer, and an overall very hot coin market. It was a great show for the majority of the dealers in attendance, although most felt a definite lack of fresh material to buy. One of the dealers commented, 'The market is alive, vibrant and strong.' This is typically the case in a buyer's market, when there is plenty of money to spend.
Besides the metals, Dollars have been in heavy demand over last several months, topping the market. But the series has hit a temporary ceiling as MS63's, 64's, and 65's have stopped advancing and, in fact, have dropped slightly. For example, the MS64 Morgan Dollar rose to a recent high of $115 FMV, but has fallen slightly to a current $107. Looking back, MS64 Morgans were $91 in 2013 and drifted steadily downward; at the beginning of 2020, they were down to $62, even then, there was little to no interest at the low level. Now, dealers and collectors look back and note how ridiculously low these coins were at the time. The Dollar market continues to be very strong with hundreds of buyers needing bags of coins in all grades.
This week's PCGS Members Only Show in Las Vegas comes on the heels of the FUN Convention and should draw some heavy dealer activity. Along with the show, Legend Rare Coin Auctions will conduct their Regency Auction 46. This sale includes a long list of high grade rare Patterns, many with populations of less than five, and the highest certified by PCGS and NGC. Pre-sale bidding appears very strong.
1799 Draped Bust Dollar certified by PCGS MS66
This 1799 Draped Bust Dollar is tied for the finest known with another certified by PCGS and one from NGC. This coin has tremendous eye-appeal, and it is the very same coin that was held by a Boston family for over 160 years. It last sold in October 2020 for $182,125 (out of the Bruce Morelan Collection) when the market was not nearly as hot. It is currently listed at $325,000 FMV.
