NumisMedia Weekly Market Report
Major Shows are Back
August 9, 2021
The ANA World's Fair of Money begins this week in Rosemont, Illinois, and even though there have been some other coin shows in the past year, this is the first major show in a very long time. Dealers have been very anxious to get back to the show circuit where most do a major portion of their business. However, the metals market has fallen dramatically in morning trading, but it remains to be seen how this will affect the upcoming show, the rare coin market, and wholesale/retail trading.
Stack's Bowers Galleries and Heritage Auctions will be sharing the ANA auction platform, but because of the unknown nature of the ANA show schedule, both auctions are scheduled to be held at their own individual headquarters the week after the show takes place. The Stack's Bowers Galleries sale will be in Costa Mesa, August 16-17, and Heritage's sale will be in Dallas, August 18-22. Still, both auction houses will have auction lot viewing throughout the length of the ANA World's Fair of Money. Potential highlights from the Stack's Bowers Sale are listed below, Heritage Auctions highlights will follow next week.
1804 Draped Bust Dollar certified by PCGS PR68
The 1804 Dollar is typically the top attraction in any collection or exhibit, but this available well-known rarity is the finest known. Stack's Bowers Galleries has the Class I Original, First Specimen Presented, certified by PCGS PR68 up for bid in their Rarities Night Sale. This coin has been in several famous collections over the last two hundred years with a pedigree of Chapman, Brand, Green, Childs, and Pogue. It was last offered in 2016 from the Pogue collection, but it did not meet the reserve. However, this rare coin market is different; there are more competitive collectors in the market today and they will be anxious to acquire a coin of this magnitude.

The 1802 Half Dime is the absolute key to the Half Dime series. There are no known Mint State coins certified by either PCGS or NGC, though there are two in PCGS AU55, one in PCGS AU53, and this NGC AU50, for a total of four in the AU50 grade. The current FMV is $287,500 for the AU50.

1827/3/2 Capped Bust Quarter certified by PCGS PR65 Cameo and CAC
This is the second finest known of the 1827/3/2 Capped Bust Quarter variety. The Garrett-Pogue coin in PCGS PR66+ Cameo sold for $705,000 in the Stack's Bowers Pogue Sale in May 2015; this PR65 Cameo is nearly as nice with a slightly different tone. There are eight PR65 coins in non-cameo.
