ANA Auctions Close with Record Sales

A week after the conclusion of the ANA World's Fair of Money, Heritage Auctions and Stack's Bowers Galleries completed their official auctions and the results were nothing short of fantastic. These two sales will be very difficult to beat in the future; with so many important highlights, it will take weeks to absorb all the data. Between the two sales there were a total of 83 items that each sold for over $100,000. These included U.S. coins, patterns, and a few gold ingots; the total realized for just these auction lots alone was over $44,000,000. Below are some of the many highlights from both sales, please check with the individual auction houses for a full list of prices realized.

1804 Draped Bust Dollar certified by PCGS PR68
This Class I Original 1804 Dollar in PCGS PR68 was the star of the sale and it brought $7,680,000; the current NumisMedia Market value is $7.5 million. This is the finest known of the existing 1804 Dollars and was the 'First Specimen Presented' to the Sultan of Muscat. There are only three Class I coins certified by PCGS: this PR68, a PR67, and a PR62. This coin has been in various collections, including the Pogue Collection from which it was last offered in 2016. The Stack's Bowers roster for this date shows a total of eight coins in existence in all grades.

1794 Draped Bust Dollar certified by NGC AU55 and CAC
The 1794 Dollar is the first dollar ever minted and is rare in all conditions. The population reports show a total of 30 coins listed in all grades from XF40 through MS66+. There are only five coins certified in all Mint State grades. This 1794 Dollar NGC AU55 CAC realized $840,000; the last time this grade sold at auction was in 2009 for $345,000. The NumisMedia CAC value is currently at $580,000, with an adjustment upcoming.

Heritage Auctions
1861 $20 Gold Paquet certified by PCGS MS67 and CAC
While the sale of the 1794 Dollar in PCGS MS66+ CAC attracted a lot of attention with a price realized of $6.6 million, the 1861 $20 Paquet was the highlight of the sale due to its extreme rarity and quality. There are only two known to exist, one each certified by PCGS and NGC, both in the 67 grade. This coin with CAC approval realized $7.2 million. While there are only two 1861 Paquet Twenties, there are numerous 1861 S examples, none are listed in Mint State, with a total of 163 coins certified in grades VF20 through AU58+.

1921 $20 Gold St Gaudens certified by NGC PR64+ and CAC
The 1921 $20 Gold St. Gaudens in NGC PR64+ CAC is another coin with just two known (the other is certified as a PCGS SP58). The last time this coin sold at auction was in 2006 when it realized $1,495,000, this time it sold for $2,010,000. An interesting note, it was listed as a PCGS MS63 when it sold back in 2006; the buyers (Dan Ratner and Brian Hendelson in partnership) must have known something others did not. It is also significant to note that the Mint stopped producing Proof $20 Saints in 1915, however, the Mint Director from 1917 through 1922 was a diplomat and authorized at least one Satin proof Saint, minted for himself, which is the current coin.
