NumisMedia Weekly Market Report

The Long Beach Expo has Finally Returned

September 27, 2021

The Long Beach Expo is back after nearly a year and a half hiatus due to the Covid-19 restrictions. The show begins for dealers this Wednesday, opens to the public on Thursday and runs through Saturday (September 30 - October 2). There are still some safety protocol requirements for all attendees that should be read over before heading out for the show. As the event returns to some normalcy, Heritage Auctions will host their famed Signature Sale with lot viewing during the show; however, the actual sale will take place at the Heritage Dallas offices October 7-10. The Heritage sale includes a long list of rare $20 Saints, many of which should redefine the prices within this important series.
1925 S $20 Gold Saint Gaudens certified by NGC MS65

The 1925 S Saint is hard to find above the MS63 grade. The original mintage was 3,776,500 but less than 500,000 were actually released by the mint, and most of those went into circulation. Out of the 127 certified, there are 38 coins in MS64, but there are only nine more coins certified in higher grades with the PCGS MS68 the highest. This MS65 is one of three certified in the grade with one other in MS65+. The current FMV for the 1925 S Saint in MS65 is at $195,000 but this value is from a much different market than we have today.

1932 $20 Saint Gaudens certified by PCGS MS65

The 1932 Saint is another ‘melted’ date with an over one million coin mintage and only about 175 total coins left available to the public. Since these were privately sold (and not circulated) all of the coins certified today by PCGS and NGC are Mint State. There is an estimated 100 coins known to exist today; the population reports indicate 150 have been certified, but it is suspected that many of these are from resubmissions. The highest grade certified is a single PCGS MS66+. The MS65 offered in this sale should command some very active bidding even though there are as many as 35 coins certified in this grade; the current FMV is at $105,630. Below are some of the other potential highlights from the Heritage Auctions Signature Sale.
