NumisMedia Weekly Market Report
Dealers and Collectors Together Again in Long Beach
October 11, 2021
The Long Beach Expo was much better than most dealers anticipated with a very active dealer setup day followed by high-spirited public attendance which kept the dealers busy with retail sales including some robust bullion related sales. From the onset of the show it was obvious that dealers and collectors missed, not only this show, but all the shows throughout the country, and most came ready to spend money on coins. With an exceptionally strong market, buyers have been very competitive and coins in demand sold quickly at Long Beach.
While lot viewing took place at the Long Beach Show, the actual Heritage Signature Sale was conducted a week later at their home offices in Dallas. The auction was also very active, and although this sale did not have a massive number of high grade rarities, there were plenty of top quality coins to satisfy an energetic group of bidders.
1870 CC $20 Gold certified by PCGS XF40
The 1870 CC Twenty had an original mintage of 3,789 but there are only about 50 known to exist today, even though the population reports show as many as 73 coins certified, the difference likely due to resubmissions. There are no Mint State coins certified which tells us that this date was not collected early on. The highest graded 1870 CC Twenty is a single AU55 by NGC, and many of the others seen over the last two decades have been severely dipped and cleaned. Therefore, collectors will be very competitive when an original coin is available, and as a result, this coin brought $360,000 against a current FMV of $312,500.

1931 D $20 Gold St. Gaudens certified by PCGS MS64 and CAC
This 1931 D Saint was another popular coin amongst the bidders in this Heritage sale, realizing $132,000 when the dust finally settled. The NumisMedia CAC value is currently at $117,500 and it will certainly be adjusted upward. Like the 1933 Saint, this date was heavily melted because of the 1933 gold recall by then President Roosevelt. Unlike the 1933, the 1931 D is legal to own, but there are still only about 150 coins known to exist today. Interestingly, most of the certified coins are Mint State with only three AU coins certified at this time; the highest graded coin is a PCGS MS66+. Below are some of the other highlights from the Heritage Signature Sale.
