Record Bid for 1870 CC Twenty at Heritage Auction
December 13, 2021
Heritage Auctions most recent Signature Sale at their Dallas Headquarters was highlighted by the finest certified PCGS AU53 1870 CC $20 Liberty. There is not a better example of advanced price discovery than this transaction. Besides this sale there were several other rarities that topped the six figure mark; listed below are some of the featured lots sold from the Heritage Auctions in Dallas.
1870 CC $20 Gold certified by PCGS AU53
The sale of the 1870 CC $20 Gold in PCGS AU53 at $1,620,000 is an indication that these highest graded rarities are in heavy demand by collectors and investors. With an original mintage of only 3,789 this date was destined to be a difficult coin to collect. There are currently only 73 coins certified in all grades by PCGS and NGC with just one in a higher grade at NGC of AU55. Many of the coins that have traded at auctions in the last 20 years are VF and XF coins, and quite a few of them had been harshly cleaned. Locating a nice original coin is a tough proposition and this AU53 is a sweet original piece.

1874 CC Seated Dime with Arrows certified by PCGS MS63
The 1874 CC Seated Dime with Arrows is extremely rare with only 76 total coins certified in all grades by PCGS and NGC. Further, PCGS has only certified five coins in all Mint State grades with the MS63 the highest. NGC has certified just one coin in Mint State, an MS64, but its exact whereabouts is not really known. This PCGS MS63 realized $264,000; it was previously best known by its 1987 sale in the Buddy Ebsen Collection by Superior Stamp & Coin where it realized just $26,400, which was huge at the time.
