NumisMedia Weekly Market Report
Auctions Bringing Out the Best
March 7, 2022
Over the last few weeks the market has really heated up with a very active Long Beach Expo, bullion has been advancing, and an extremely active auction market; dealers should be feeling pretty good about the near term.
The major auction houses continue to find high-valued rarities to showcase and the Heritage Auctions Long Beach Expo sale was another fine example. While Heritage featured the auction at Long Beach with lot viewing, they continued their recent policy of delaying the actual sale for one week and holding it at their Dallas headquarters. Featured below are a few of the important highlights from the Long Beach Expo Signature Sale hosted by Heritage.
1848 $2.5 Gold CAL. certified by PCGS MS62
The 1848 CAL. had an original mintage of 1,389 and there are only 46 coins in the Mint State category with the possibility of some being resubmissions. There are two coins certified as MS68 with one at each grading service. There are only 77 coins certified in all the circulated grades; the certified total of 123 coins helps explain why this is such a popular issue (along with the CAL. punch, of course). This PCGS MS62 realized $114,000; the previous Market value of $92,500 will be updated to show this higher value.

1932 $20 Gold Saint Gaudens certified by PCGS MS65
While the 1933 and 1927 D are the two foremost rarities in the Saint Gaudens series, there are at least ten more coins that break $100,000 in MS65 and higher grades. This 1932 in PCGS MS65 sold for $156,000 against our most current Market value of $125,000. There are a total of 35 coins certified in MS65 by PCGS and NGC combined, however, there are only about 100 of these coins known, all of them Mint State, with MS66+ being the highest with two PCGS coins. Obviously, these coins escaped the melting pot when the confiscation order was authorized in 1933; over 1,000,000 of the original mintage were melted.
