Hot Market Trend Continues in Baltimore

In keeping with the new norm at major coin shows, the just completed Whitman Coin & Collectibles Expo in Baltimore proved to be very successful for attending dealers. While most dealers are doing rather well at their offices and stores, they are very pleased to get back to the show circuit, to meet with other dealers and view inventory up close and personal. Rare coins and bullion remain active as they have been over the last year and sales continue to take place at current levels or higher.
Besides the sustaining vigorous coin market, Stack's Bowers Galleries held lot viewing for their Spring Auction which will be held at their Costa Mesa offices this week. Below are some of the potential highlights, including a few spotlighted Three Dollar Gold coins, from the upcoming Stack's Bowers Galleries sale.
1866 Three Dollar Gold certified by PCGS PR66 Deep Cameo and CAC
The 1866 Three Dollar Gold is definitely one of the top ten rarities of this popular series. With an initial mintage of just 30 coins, it is elusive in all grades; in fact, there are less than 20 coins certified by PCGS and NGC in all grades including the Cameo and Deep Cameo designations. This coin is the highest certified and the only one with the CAC approval. There is also a long pedigree for this particular coin including Woodin, Clapp, and Eliasberg. This sale will allow us to finally put a value on this grade.

1877 Three Dollar Gold certified by PCGS PR66+ Deep Cameo
The 1877 Three Dollar Gold had an original mintage of only 20 coins and, according to the population reports of PCGS and NGC, they seem to have all been accounted for with a total population of 27 which includes some in circulated grades. Obviously, some of these coins have been resubmitted in the past; the numbers could be skewed from the early days of the grading services when Cameo and Deep Cameo designation were not placed on these coins. Like the 1866, it is a top ten rarity for the series and this available coin is the highest grade for the date. There are a total of four coins in this grade category, three by PCGS and one by NGC. Again, this grade does not yet have a current value in the NumisMedia Price Guides.
