NumisMedia Weekly Market Report
Widespread Market Demand Persists
April 18, 2022
The results are in from the latest Stack's Bowers Galleries auction which took place after the Baltimore Whitman Coin & Collectibles Expo. Stack's Bowers held a comprehensive viewing in Baltimore with the actual sale taking place at their California offices. The overall coin market remains solid, resiliently active, and expanding as dealers and collectors from all over the world are participating. Rare U.S. Gold is leading the collector and investor market and the Three Dollar Gold series was one of the strongest areas of this sale with over 35 lots bringing anywhere from $10,000 to nearly $200,000. There were also 15 Twenty Dollar Gold coins that brought over $100,000 and an 1870 CC sold for $810,000.
1795 Draped Bust Dollar Centered Bust certified by PCGS SP65
This 1795 Draped Bust Dollar is the only coin known for this variety and was used as the Bowers Plate Coin in Bowers' 1993 Complete Encyclopedia of United States Silver Dollars. This PCGS SP65 is one of only three Specimen coins for the 1795 Draped Bust Dollar and it brought $780,000. The other two Specimens are certified as SP65 and SP66, both are the Off-Center Draped Bust variety. The Centered Bust is truly a one-of-a-kind rarity.

1907 $10 Gold Indian Rolled Edge certified by PCGS MS67 and CAC
Stack's Bowers describes this coin as Rounded Rim with Periods, but is clearly titled Rolled Edge on the PCGS label. With a mintage of only 42 coins, this is a wonderful rarity, and very rare in the top grades of MS66 and higher. PCGS lists three coins in MS67 with only one higher in MS67+, and NGC lists two coins in MS67 and only one in MS67+. The PCGS MS67 in this sale realized an incredible $1,140,000. The population reports have a total number of coins certified in all grades of 83 which nearly doubles the original mintage. Obviously many of these coins have been resubmitted for a better grade, but this information also suggests that it is quite likely that the numbers for the higher grades are exaggerated as well. Check with Stack's Bowers Galleries for the complete prices realized for this tremendous sale.
