NumisMedia Weekly Market Report

Spotlight on Chicago and the ANA World's Fair of Money

August 8, 2022

This year's ANA World's Fair of Money in Chicago is a little more than a week away, running August 16-20. While the overall coin market has quieted the past couple of months, it looks like it is beginning to heat up again with summer winding down. It also helps that the metals have surged this past week after a heavy drop, with Gold hitting below $1,700 for a short time. Currently Gold is at $1,788.50 and activity on the dealer trading networks has been quite busy for the last week or so.
This is the first year in a long time that Heritage Auctions or Stack's Bowers Galleries has not been the official auctioneer for the World's Fair of Money. The honor this year goes to Great Collections which is owned and operated by Ian Russell. Great Collections has been running successful auctions on a weekly basis for several years now and they are quite determined to have equal success in conjunction with this major convention. Highlights should be available once the sale is completed.
Competition for auction material has been intense as the major auction houses have been persistent in their search of their client bases for rarities that will attract buyers to their sales. While Heritage and Stack's Bowers may not enjoy this year's title of Official Auctioneer of the ANA, they do have major auctions with a strong number of rarities appearing in sales immediately following the ANA at their respective offices. Below are some of the potential highlights from the Heritage Sale with Stack's Bowers highlights to be listed next week.
1927 D $20 Gold St Gaudens certified by PCGS MS66

The 1927 D $20 Gold St Gaudens is the rarest of all collectible Saints (the 1933 is unobtainable with just one coin legal to own). While there was a somewhat high mintage for this date, there are only 15 total coins certified by the two grading services, and this coin is one of only eight certified as MS66 with some possible resubmissions. There is only one coin listed in PCGS MS67. The current FMV in MS66 is $2,718,750.

1927 D $20 Gold St Gaudens PCGS MS66 is available at Heritage Auctions U.S. Coins Signature Sale in Dallas, Texas, August 22-28, 2022

1802 Half Dime certified by PCGS AU53 and CAC

The 1802 Half Dime is a truly amazing rarity with no more than 31 known coins with the majority of them in grades below Very Good. There are no known Mint State coins and there are only two certified higher than this coin at PCGS AU55. This very same coin sold in a previous Heritage Auction in 2017 for $329,000. There are no auction records for the AU55 coins. The current CAC value listed for AU53 is $460,000.

1802 Half Dime PCGS AU53 CAC is available at Heritage Auctions U.S. Coins Signature Sale in Dallas, Texas, August 22-28, 2022
