NumisMedia Weekly Market Report
Major Auctions Realize High Prices for Rarities
August 29, 2022
The ANA World's Fair of Money was generally a very successful show for the majority of dealers, however, it was mostly a dealer show with not enough retail traffic to satisfy those who focus on the needs of collector attendees. There was still plenty to do at this major ANA event including the viewing of lots for possibly the two most important auctions of 2022.
The two post-ANA auctions, hosted by Heritage Auctions and Stack's Bowers Galleries, held at their respective offices, have produced some unbelievable prices realized. While average coins brought average prices, the rarities realized phenomenal numbers, the highest graded rarities are continuing to command top dollar at major auctions. There also seems to be plenty of dealers, collectors, and investors with big money to spend on the right coins, and the competition is fueling even higher prices.
The two major highlights from the auctions were both $4 million coins. Heritage sold the 1927 D $20 Gold St Gaudens in PCGS MS66 for $4,440,000 and Stack's Bowers sold the unique 1825/4/1 $5 Gold Capped Bust in PCGS PR67 Cameo with CAC approval for $4,080,000. These prices realized were most likely boosted by the well-known pedigrees of the respective coins.
Both auctions contained a massive number of rarities that attracted extremely competitive bidding. Below are just some of the many highlights from the post-ANA sales of Heritage Auctions and Stack's Bowers Galleries. With so many truly rare coins in these two sales, please be sure to check with each auction house for their prices realized.
