That Time of the Year: Holiday Shopping and Bullion

December 12, 2022

As the year winds down and the Holiday Season approaches, dealers have been unsurprisingly concentrating on seasonal sales for gift-giving which includes, to a great extent, bullion related items. The trading networks are predominantly covered with Gold & Silver bullion items with sprinkles of Platinum, Palladium, etc. Collector coins are still in demand but at a less aggressive percentage. The major auctions are basically over for the year until the FUN Show with Heritage Auctions hosting the 2023 sale, a tradition since 1997. Heritage Auctions will also be hosting a Signature Sale, December 15-18, at their Dallas offices which is not attached to a major coin show.
This past week Legend Rare Coin Auctions held their Regency Auction 56 in Las Vegas in conjunction with the PCGS Member's Only Show, and as usual had an array of superb quality coins. They remain one of the top auction houses with a majority of their offerings either quite rare or premium quality for the grade; many of their coins are either CAC approved, have the + designation, or both. The one drawback to this specific sale was that a few of the ultra-rarities had reserves that were a little too aggressive for buyers at this time. However, there were still many highlights from which to choose.
1795 Flowing Hair Half Dime certified by PCGS MS66 and CAC

The 1795 Half Dime does have a substantial original mintage, there are slightly over 250 coins certified in all Mint State grades, with 16 coins in MS66 and just 6 of those have CAC approval. There are also a total of 8 certified in MS67 with two of those being CAC. This is a spectacular coin, and the last two examples sold by Legend were in the $100,000 range, so this coin seems like a bargain at $76,375. The current NumisMedia CAC value is $106,000.

1909 VDB Lincoln Cent certified by PCGS PR66 Red & Brown and CAC

The 1909 VDB Lincoln Cent in Matte Proof is truly a rare coin and this particular piece is every bit as nice as most of the others in the high grades, and even as eye-appealing as the Red coins of the same grade. There are over 30 coins certified in PR66 and higher in the RB & Red categories, but it is very likely that some of these are resubmissions and the actual number is probably somewhere between 20-25 coins. Further, there are more than enough collectors of this rarity to absorb any and all of the coins in PR65 and higher, especially when they are this nice. Our current CAC value is at $59,500 while the coin in this sale realized $47,000. Below are some other highlights from Legend's Regency 56 Sale.
