NumisMedia Weekly Market Report
Proof Cameo $3 Gold Brings Over $2 Million
February 13, 2023
Despite the metals taking a massive hit at Long Beach most dealers reported a great show. The rare coin market appears steady with most coins trading within 10% of current wholesale levels. Yes, there are more declines than advances, but the overall market appears healthy with plenty of buyers looking for want listed coins. The metals are in a decline at this time with Gold currently at $1,855. Most buyers are viewing this as an opportunity to add to their inventories or portfolios at these lower levels.
Heritage Auctions hosted one of their Signature Sales with lot viewing at the Long Beach show and the sale commencing a week later at their Dallas headquarters. There were eighteen coins that brought over $100,000, the majority of them U. S. Gold. Nearly half of these high valued lots were from the $3 Gold series.
1855 S $3 Gold certified by PCGS PR64 Cameo and CAC
The 1855 S $3 Gold is the only known minted coin and it was held in the original owner’s family for over a century. It sold for $2,160,000; the previous NumisMedia value was listed at $1,800,000, which will be adjusted in the next update. It was acknowledged back in 1984, David Akers wrote:
"This coin is undoubtedly UNIQUE and its existence was not known or even rumored until it surfaced in the San Francisco Bay Area a short time ago. Its proof status is, in our opinion, absolutely certain and the coin was surely struck to mark the first minting of the Three Dollar denomination at the San Francisco Mint. (At least one Quarter and two or three Half Dollars were struck for a similar purpose in 1855 and this coin is identical in overall 'fabric' to those pieces. There is also a single proof 1854-S $20 in the Smithsonian minted a year earlier to commemorate the first $20 struck in S.F.)."
