Buyer's Market Prior to Stack's Bowers Sale

With the Summer Whitman Baltimore Expo behind us, dealers and collectors now can fully focus their attention on the Official Auction. Stack's Bowers Galleries hosted potential buyers for lot viewing at the show and the actual sale will be conducted this week at their home office back in Costa Mesa, California. This sale provides a variety of collector coins from Half Cents through U.S. Gold; there should be some attention placed on bullion related coins especially since the premiums have fallen over the last few weeks. Below are some of the potential highlights from this Stack's Bowers Galleries sale.
1879 $4 Gold Flowing Hair Stella certified by PCGS PR61
The $4 Gold Stella is unique in that it is only a two-year series, minted in 1879 and 1880. The total mintage for the series is at most 490 coins, depending on which authority you follow. The number of coins certified by PCGS and NGC is well over 600, so there have been a lot of resubmissions over the years. Many of the coins certified are the 1879 Proof and Cameo, with well over 500 coins certified in these two categories, but the entire Stella series is popular with collectors and there are always buyers for this coin in all grades. 1884 CC $10 Gold certified by NGC MS61
The 1884 CC $10 Gold had an original mintage of just 9,925 coins with only 22 listed in the population reports in all Mint State grades. The highest certified is a PCGS MS63 and there are a couple of MS62's listed. The MS61 is listed with an FMV of $41,560; three auctions last year all realized between $30,000 and $38,400. While Carson City coins in general are always popular with collectors and dealers, CC Gold is even more popular in today's market. Like most series in numismatics, there are cycles where values change according to the current demand; this market is quite active, and buyers are looking for CC Gold.
