NumisMedia Weekly Market Report
All Focused on the Steel City ANA
August 7, 2023
The typical summer slowdown in business may have led to a cooling off period for the coin market, or perhaps the market is just resetting for another run, and that run could start this week. The World's Fair of Money in Pittsburgh, presented by the ANA, is expected to bring thousands of dealers and collectors together and showcase our wonderful numismatic industry. The show runs from August 8-12, and the two top auction houses are sharing the limelight for this event: Heritage Auctions and Stack's Bowers Galleries. There are literally hundreds of magnificent rarities in both auctions, so make sure you spend some time looking through their respective catalogues and their viewings at the ANA.
Heritage Auctions has several catalogues with one main event occurring at the show and the rest of the sale taking place next week at their Dallas offices. Heritage will have viewing for all of the lots at the show including their featured auction, the Harry W. Bass JR. Core Collection, Part IV. Below are some of the highlights from this portion of the Heritage Sale.
1907 $20 St Gaudens Ultra High Relief certified by PCGS PR69
It simply does not get any better than this 1907 $20 St Gaudens PCGS PR69 Ultra High Relief with the Inverted Edge Lettering. There are an estimated 20 coins known, but five of them are in institutional collections, leaving just 15 available for collectors. This is the absolute finest known, and not only that, the pedigree is fantastic as well. Out of the Harry W. Bass Collection, this coin was previously owned and well-preserved by such collectors as Brownlee, Eliasberg, and Clapp. To the knowledgeable numismatist, this coin is easily as recognizable as the 1804 Dollar, the 1894 S Dime, and the 1913 Nickel. What a prize this will be for the ultimate winner of this lot; currently listed with a NumisMedia FMV of $5,915,000.

1798 $5 Gold Small Eagle certified by PCGS AU53
This is the highest certified 1798 $5 Gold Small Eagle by PCGS, although there is one in PCGS AU55 that is a slightly different variety (the Pogue coin that brought $1,175,000 in 2015). This coin also has a well-known pedigree with previous owners Eliasberg, Clapp, and B. Max Mehl. The original mintage for this date is just seven coins, and there are just three coins total listed in the population reports by PCGS and NGC combined. The NumisMedia FMV for the AU53 is currently at $918,750, but this coin will likely set a record for the grade and prices will need to be adjusted accordingly.

Stack's Bowers Galleries also has several catalogues and collections being offered with most of the sales hosted at their offices in Costa Mesa next week. However, the Fairmont Collection sale takes place August 9th at the Pittsburgh ANA. There are over 450 U.S. Gold lots, with long runs of nearly complete sets of $5, $10, and $20 Gold coins. The featured sale for Stack's Bowers is Rarities Night, August 16th, with many top rarities available that are seldom offered in today's market. Below are some of the potential highlights.
1848 $2.5 Gold CAL. certified by NGC MS68*
This absolute gem 1848 $2.5 Gold, with CAL. emblazoned above the Eagle on the reverse, is one of the finest known and, by some standards, is considered our first commemorative coin. With an original mintage of 1389, there are 79 coins listed in the population reports by PCGS and NGC in all circulated grades and there are only 47 total in all Mint State grades. This issue has always been very popular with collectors and attracts buyers with every available sale; the Gold Rush Era lends credence to its popularity. The NumisMedia FMV for the MS68 is at $617,500.

1870 CC $10 Gold certified by PCGS AU58 and CAC
Even with an original mintage of 5,908 coins, the 1870 CC $10 Gold is an extreme rarity in all grades. There are an estimated 45 to 60 coins known, even though there are 103 certified in all grades, an indication that this may be one of the most resubmitted issues to the grading services. This PCGS AU58 with the CAC sticker is the highest certified for the date and there is no current NumisMedia price listed. There is a PCGS AU53 being offered on CCE for $227,500, so if you are not able to win this lot, there is one available at what may be a very reasonable price compared to this AU58.
