NumisMedia Weekly Market Report
Harry W. Bass Jr. Collection Highlights from ANA
August 14, 2023
The two auctions associated with the Pittsburgh ANA had some very successful results, and there is more to come this week at the main offices of Heritage Auctions in Dallas, Texas and Stack's Bowers Galleries in Costa Mesa, California. While most sales have been very competitive so far, there are some signs of discounting from previous prices. Buyers are being very conservative right now, and it appears that some others are waiting to see how the market plays out. This can reduce prices realized and it is especially noticeable on a few high ticket items. Below are some of the many highlights from the Heritage sale of the Harry W. Bass Jr. Core Collection, Part IV.
1829 $5 Gold Capped Bust certified by PCGS PR66+ Cameo and CAC
This 1829 $5 Gold in PCGS PR66+ Cameo with CAC approval is the only proof coin listed in the population reports (there is one other PR66 Deep Cameo, as described by Garrett and Guth, in the Smithsonian); this one just sold for $3,840,000. With really only one proof coin available for a high-end collection, this might have been a once in a lifetime opportunity. There are believed to be less than 10 business strikes available, which makes sense according to the population reports with two coins in MS61, four coins in MS62, one in MS63 and one other in MS65+ and CAC. The 1829 Small Date is the first year of this type, with a reduced diameter from the previous Large Date type that ran from 1813 to 1829.

1907 $20 St Gaudens Ultra High Relief certified by PCGS PR69
This 1907 Ultra High Relief with the Inverted Edge Lettering was the top seller in this portion of the sale, however, the PCGS certified PR69 realized $4,320,000, a high final price but plenty below the estimate; the NumisMedia FMV is currently at $5,915,000. This can happen when one or two big buyers are absent from the market. Even though this coin is extremely rare, a 25% discount is quite a bit for a rarity of this magnitude.
